Innovation is a distraction

Let me stop you right there. That is bullshit.
We do absolutely know what we need to to to fight the climate crisis: Reduce carbon emissions radically. Which we have known for decades (I was taught about the “greenhouse effect” in motherfucking school 30 years ago and my schools never have been especially avant-garde). We know that we need to stop burning fossil fuels, stop eating as much meat, invest in cleaner energy sources and insulate houses, etc. We know.
But it’s inconvenient. The solutions we know, we have researched, we have tested, are annoying. They force us to change our lives, force us to rethink our social and economic structures (Oh who would have thought: An economic system based on limitless growth and consumption would lead to bad outcomes. Let’s start a research project!). And who wants to do all that?
The demand for more Innovation (and sometimes even the request for more research) has become a way to legitimize not doing anything. A way to say “the unpleasant solutions we have are not perfect but in the future there might be a magic solution that doesn’t bother us and everyone gets a fucking unicorn”.
Nuclear fusion has had a bit of a narrative renaissance: With AI bros trying to boil our planet they need more power and because admitting that this will lead to more carbon emissions it’s great to claim that fusion will totally solve that in a clean and abundant way. It’s just that this clean working fusion doesn’t exist. Don’t get me wrong: There is one meaningfully useful kind of fusion that we can harness to generate energy and it is happening remotely on the sun. But fusion power plants? They do not exist. And arguing that we should invest a whole lot into developing them because they would be amazing to have stops us from doing the required work.
I’m not against someone coming up with clean nuclear fusion. Be my guest. But we do not have that yet and the climate crisis is raging. We need to harness solar, wind, geothermal and other renewables to change our energy production and we need to stop doing certain things that are a waste of energy. Reduce consumption and change production of energy. And if while we are doing that you find an even better method of energy production in a fusion reactor or fucking Narnia, cool.
But talking about nonexisting things as if they existed is not just a waste of time and money and brainpower. It is increasingly harmful. My talk on Empty Innovation at last year’s re:publica talked about we get sold a lot of stuff as innovation that’s nothing and how that is a method for powerful people to stay in power, to not change the system or have it changed.
I think this aspect is slightly different. Because this one also is us all buying in: We are so happy to “do more research” or “bring forward innovation” if it means that we can just keep doing what we’ve always done. If it means that we don’t need to change.
Innovation often is the promise that the things that affect us, that might destroy us, will magically not affect us. If we just believe enough. Calling it juvenile would be unfair to teens who do go out into the cold to demonstrate, who do reduce their consumption. It’s ignorant. And it will get many people killed. Unless we stop being distracted by the promises of shiny things and get our heads in the game.
I am making up a number now but my gut feeling is that we need 0 innovation to tackle at least 90% of the problems that challenge our societies, us as individuals and humankind as a whole. We just need to grow up and start doing the actual work. The German writer Bertolt Brecht called it “die Mühen der Ebenen” (loosely translated as “the troubles of the plains”): We are no longer climbing up the hill to reach higher and higher grounds – strenuous activities made possible by the hope of wonder and enlightenment – we have to start trudging through the plains in the hope of reaching our future.

There are a number of "hard problems" facing ActivityPub development today. One of which is the oft-repeated refrain that "the fediverse is quiet". This is most often experienced when any given conversation might not be seen as the entire conversation. To begin with I do consider that it is not only reasonable but even mandatory to have more than one profile in a decentralized system. There for, having besides a friendica account a mastodon account, sounds quite logical. So as mastodon does have pool's, such a general setup of profiles solves the main problem/issue/request.
Than there is the fact that friendica, by having like an dislike in posts and answers., basically a poll option does exist, it only has to be discovered and integrated to the cultural use of this platform.
So, by having two opposing choices like yes/no -> like/dislike we can do pools with three expressions:
yes
no
yes+no

If a pool is designed and published immediately with answers for every alternative option/question we would have a pool feature by design if the pool is published in the right manner.

I think having support for real polls is superior than abusing like / dislike for polls. Many polls cannot be answered with like / dislike. Thus I "vote" with dislike.
On the long run ideally like + dislike will be replaced by allowing arbitrary emoji reactions. And like + dislike are optional so many instances opt to disable dislike. And while I am a big fan of allowing any emoji, those instances also have good reasons to limit reactions.

Thumbs up / down was never designed for polls so yes, abuse / misuse / unintended use of implementation is accurate. In my way of meaning this is conservativ BS
What is true, and worth while too point out, is that 👎👍 is the global international sign language since the roman empire, so in the first place I'd suppose that we should skip the words in all languages for the thumbs, if we haven't done already, and only leave the thumbs sign. That way we skip the fb BS of friends and likes imposed by a criminal psycopath on the world of the 21first century.
By doing that, instead of arguing that some original intent and design is a wall that has to be respected as a rule cisceled into stone, we could give our minds the chance to think outside the box and evolve the design of our tool friendica, actually be a quite cool KISS move, opening the doors of our software wide open to become even capable of having a democratic feature used to make laws in most evolved democracies of the planet.

@utopiArte Friendica already has read-only supports for polls according to the ActivityPub implemented by Mastodon. However allowing users to participate in polls requires more frontend chops than we currently have. 😔

This may be already available since we’re storing remote polls. - Wire the form to the post creation in the already humongous Item module. - Add support for polls in the ActivityPub post transmission. - Add a fallback display for Diaspora which we still support.

The challenges: - Currently polls are cached with the rest of the post body for all local users. Allowing individual users to vote and displaying their choice(s) invalidate this caching mechanism, so the poll display needs a special treatment, either synchronously with the associated page load performance hit, or asynchronously with a progressive enhancement of the poll display. - The vote module must take into account the poll policies (expiration, number of allowed choices) and transmit votes to the remote system where the poll originated. If the poll originated on Friendica, it must transmit the updated vote aggregates to the post’s recipients.
As you can see, it isn’t trivial and it touches several internal features of Friendica.
Even tho the emoji conversation is offtopic: Not out of the need for some kind of agreement or to meet in the middle, @Wilhelm but integrating the fact that emojis do exist and ar a nice tool and at the same time trying to prevent them spamming our content the following came up, looking at the emoji bar of the github link you posted.
Introducing the selection button, inbetween thumbs up and thumbs down allowing only one selection of emoji would create a new kind of combined basic expressions.

I'd want a poll created on Friendica to be presented as a poll on other Fediverse platforms, especially since the downvote isn't available on all platforms (or even instances). This is not really possible with your suggestion. A free-form post is difficult to transform into a proper poll, which I assume needs be done in the background by the Friendica-to-ActivityPub connector.
Transforming a Friendica poll into a Mastodon poll (and vice versa) seems doable, if someone steps up to take on the task.

In other words what you are proposing is a poll request elaborated/discussed on friendica could be published from mastodon, and actually also on D*, to breach the gap?
Yes, that's about it. I think polls have semantics that go beyond free-form-post-with-likes-and-dislikes. Therefore, I think a poll should be sent as a poll - and votes as votes - to the platforms that support that. (Didn't remember that D* has polls.)
Platforms that don't have polls should probably just be sent an ordinary post and be left out of the voting.
No integration of the result at all. Actually there is some kind of, f^, we need to talk, what are we going to do with D*. D*, we need to talk what are your plans in general terms? (but that's offtopic here, @all please ignore!)

@bitpickup se podría decir que hay dos carnavales, el popular, y el "concurso oficial del Carnaval" (que se desarrolla en Montevideo, pero en el que no participan exclusivamente conjuntos del departamento). En el concurso oficial participan chiquicientos conjuntos de diversas categorías (murgas, parodistas, humoristas, comparsas, etc.) para poder participar hay una etapa clasificatoria, y después los conjuntos clasificados se presentan dos veces en el Teatro de Verano, donde son calificados por un jurado crecientemente polémico, y los mejores de cada categoría pasan a "la liguilla", los que pasan ala liguilla se presentan una tercerca vez en el Teatro de Verano, y la última noche se suman todos los puntos de las 3 rondas y se declaran los ganadores. Paralelo a esto los conjuntos se presentan en los tablados de los barrios donde aprovechan para probar "mechas" (chistes por fuera del guión original que suelen tratar temas de actualidad) y... mehr anzeigen

@jesuisatire digamos que todos los años aparece algún miembro del jurado al que lr encuentran declaraciones polémicas respecto a los conjuntos a los que tiene que evaluar. Entre otras cosas
ese es el caso que recuerdo ahora, fue el año pasado, una miembro del jurado había dicho directamente que La Trasnochada era una murga de mierda llena de violadores, y cuando le tocó puntuarla había una diferencia importante entre los puntajes de ella y los del resto del jurado. A ver, lq loca tenía razón, pero lo que estuvo mal fue publicarlo y quedar tan en evidencia. Después está el típico "este no sabe nada de carnaval" y hubo uno que para que te puntuara bien el conjunto te lo tenías que co*er (contado públicamente por gente de carnaval que se lo tuvo que co*er para pasar a la liguilla).

En uy se festeja carnaval en muchas formas. En Mvd está el concurso oficial que participan (murgas, parodistas, humoristas, revistas, comparsas) que se presentan en el Teatro de Verano y también en tablados, hay tablados comerciales y otros que no. Está carnaval barrio a barrio y de a pie. Antes está el concurso de murga joven y el carnaval de las promesas. El desfile de innauguración, el de escuelas de samba y las llamadas. Además están los corsos barriales. También hay propuestas como más carnaval creo que era,pro fuera del concurso oficial.
En Artigas hay escuelas de Samba, en Rivera es más tipo blocos. En Rocha, ta el carnaval de la pedrera o estaba, tipo fiesta en la calle, de disfraces y bastante descontrol.
La mayoría de comparsas solo desfila, algunas tmb participan del concurso oficial con esoectáculo de escenario pero cla originalmente es un conjunto qie desfilaba

Compared with 2020 levels of fast charging, this was extremely fast. But with charging in ~10 minutes, a full battery swap doesn't sound really useful anymore.
I feel like there’s still a use-case for swapping. I’m not an expert but I imagine superfast charging like this can be taxing to the battery and will shorten its life faster. The idea of getting a fresh, fully charged battery at a charging station without having to plug in sounds convenient too.
There will be some use cases of course, but the price is too high for most. Currently, the price is 169€/month for the battery rent alone, additional "swaps" cost extra.
At this price point, it doesn't seem economical for me.
Well, my only concern is that on the one hand the company is very meticulous about the internal network, but on the other hand messengers such as WhatsApp, etc. are used for internal communication. That doesn't go together. TikTok is just a new addition.

Der aktuelle Server stößt vor allem beim Arbeitsspeicher (RAM) an seine Grenzen. Um die Stabilität und Performance langfristig zu gewährleisten, ist ein Upgrade dringend erforderlich.
