Each for Equal – der Internationale Frauentag 2025

Der erste Internationale Frauentag wurde 1911 in Dänemark, Deutschland, Österreich, Bulgarien, der Schweiz und den USA begangen, nachdem er im Jahr zuvor auf der II. Internationalen Sozialistischen Frauenkonferenz in Kopenhagen ins Leben gerufen wurde. Die Idee zu einem Frauen(streik)-Tag kam durch die US-amerikanische Sozialistin May Wood-Simons nach Europa. Clara Zetkin und Käte Duncker setzten sich auf dem Kongress dafür ein, dass dieser Tag auch in Europa Fuß fassen sollte.

Anders als heute wurde dieser Tag jedoch nicht am 8. März begangen, sondern zunächst am 19. März. Die Wahl dieses Datums sollte den revolutionären Charakter des Frauentags unterstreichen, denn der nahegelegene 18. März war der Gedenktag für die in Berlin Gefallenen während der Revolution von 1848. In den Folgejahren fand der Frauentag an keinem festen Datum, sondern an wechselnden Daten statt, 1918 beispielsweise am 5. Mai, dem 100. Geburtstag von Karl Marx.

Erst 1921 erfolgte die endgültige Festlegung auf den 8. März zu Ehren der Rolle der Frauen in der Februarrevolution (Hinweis: der 23. Februar im julianischen Kalender entspricht dem 8. März im gregorianischen Kalender). In den Anfangsjahren wurde dieser Tag vor allem von der Sozialdemokratie und den Gewerkschaften getragen. Das beherrschende Thema war die Forderung nach dem freien, geheimen und gleichen Frauenwahlrecht.

Mit der Erklärung des freien, geheimen aktiven und passiven Wahlrechtes für Männer und Frauen hatten Clara Zetkin und ihre Mitstreiterin ihr Ziel am 12. November 1918 erreicht. Im Januar 1919 konnten Frauen das erste Mal in Deutschland wählen und gewählt werden. Doch schnell stellte sich heraus, dass das Wahlrecht allein viele Probleme nicht lösen konnte. Vor allem das Thema Frauenarbeit rückte nun in die Aufmerksamkeit. Zentrale Forderungen waren unter anderem Arbeitsschutzgesetze, gleicher Anspruch auf Bildung, ausreichender Schutz für Mütter und Kinder, gleicher Lohn für gleiche Arbeit oder legaler Schwangerschaftsabbruch.

Mit Hitlers Machtergreifung kam der Internationale Frauentag ab 1933 zum Erliegen und wurde umgehend verboten. Stattdessen gewann der schon in der Weimarer Republik begangene Muttertag an Bedeutung. Doch trotz des offiziellen Verbotes wurde der Frauentag auch in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus weiter begangen, wenn auch nur im Privaten. Man lud sich an diesem Tag zu Kaffeekränzchen ein oder hing rote Stoffe oder Kleidungsstücke zum Lüften aus den Fenstern und an Wäscheleinen.

Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg änderten sich Durchführung und Thematik des Internationalen Frauentages erneut. In der DDR wurde er in Form staatlich gelenkter Feiern als „Tag der Frau“ begangen. Die Staats- und Parteiführung verlieh dabei jährlich die Clara-Zetkin-Medaille zur Würdigung von Initiativen und des Fleißes der Frauen.

In der BRD hatte der Frauentag aufgrund seiner sozialistischen Geschichte einen schweren Stand. Er wurde nur von einer kleinen Minderheit begangen, die sich vor allem für Frieden und gegen die Wiederaufrüstung Westdeutschlands engagierte und geriet so gut wie in Vergessenheit. Erst in den 1980er Jahren gewann er durch die neue Frauenbewegung wieder an Bedeutung. Er wurde zunehmend zum Tag der feministischen Solidarität unter Frauen verschiedener Schicht, Herkunft und Generation. Doch es dauerte noch bis 1994, bis der Frauentag wieder als Protesttag (Frauenstreiktag) begangenen wurde – damals vor dem Hintergrund hoher Frauenarbeitslosigkeit und dem Abbau der Kinderbetreuung im Osten.

Heute wird der Internationale Frauentag – auch Weltfrauentag – von Frauen unterschiedlicher politischer Richtungen gefeiert und ist ein gesetzlicher Feiertag in 28 Staaten (in Deutschland nur in Berlin und Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). Seit die UN-Generalversammlung 1977 mit einer Resolution alle Staaten dazu aufforderte, einen Tag im Jahr zum „Tag für die Rechte der Frau und den Weltfrieden“ zu erklären, steht er unter jährlich wechselnden Schwerpunktthemen. So lag der Fokus in den letzten Jahren auf besserer Bildung für Mädchen, mehr Beteiligung von Frauen an politischen Entscheidungsprozessen oder besseren Lebensverhältnissen für Frauen in ländlichen Regionen.

Aus Anlass des 114. Internationalen Frauentages haben wir an verschieden TIB-Standorten Themenregale erstellt. Dort präsentieren wir jeweils ausgewählte Titel zum Thema, die auch ausgeliehen werden können. Die Zusammenstellung wird sich daher im Lauf der Zeit immer wieder ändern.

Am Standort TIB Conti-Campus präsentieren wir im Lesesaal des 1. OG ein gemeinsames Themenregal des Fachbestandes Wirtschaft (FBW) und des Fachbestandes Rechtswissenschaften (FBR).

Das sehr gut recherchierte Werk stellt eindrucksvoll die Karrierewege von Elisabeth Boedeker und Dr. Elisabeth Weber in der Zeit zwischen Weimarer und Bonner Republik dar und ist mit der Signatur Hist N 8829/145 am Standort TIB Philosophie/Geschichte zu finden.

Und wer jetzt noch mehr wissen möchte: Die TIB sie engagiert sich mit ihrem Dienst „Preservation-as-a-Service“ für den Erhalt und die Langzeitarchivierung des Digitalen Deutschen Frauenarchivs (DDF). This is a post actually directed in part to the @Friendica Support forum page of our free open source software community. I guess you heard the term #friendica already, as you are quite a while in the fedi, beginning with your #diaspora presence a long time ago. Our main coder @Michael Vogel is a fan of yours (if I got that right). I asked him the other day in a FOSDEM element chat, if he considers it possible that you make some drawings for friendica, maybe even for every new version, we have like two o three releases every year.

The idea came up because on this server we decided to use the following comic on the login/welcome page:

It seemed to me that Michael liked the idea to have some drawing by you, so I don't want to let the idea slip away and ask you, as well as the community, what everyone thinks about such an option. There are also the 403, 404, 500 and so on error pages. Well maybe those are more a task for @isfies!, who knows ..

I guess previous week Sunday was the last ice swim of this season. During the week before the temperatures were really cold but on the weekend they were already above freezing and the ice was brittle. We reopened the path we cut the weekend before to take a dip.

In the afternoon it but turned above 14ºC and we could witness that one of our two beehives seem to have survived the winter. The bees were coming out and cleaning their hive.

Local LLM setup

Made progress with my local LLM setup. Finally got the RAG properly working with my documents. I’m using Open WebUI as interface for the Ollama installation on my machine. For the RAG setup I use the Ollama model bge-m3:latest to generate the embeddings of the documents. Also tweaked the values of Top K to 10.

The biggest difference seems to make the System prompt and the query prompt. I’ve created custom models by combining an existing model plus my knowledge objects (the documents I’ve uploaded with the embeddings generated as described above) and a custom system prompt.

The system prompt explains to the model what it is and also especially the structure of the knowledge objects. This way the model has a better “idea” of what data it’s dealing with and can respond more accurately to the queries later on.

Dinner

Wednesday I was at a friends place for dinner. Was meant to be a bigger round at first, but eventually most others had to bail out for being sick. So just my friend with her husband an me. Was still a great evening with delicious food and lots of conversations. Learned a lot about onions 😄

I’m walking

Trying to walk to the office more often now. Roughly takes me one hour to get there and is a nice exercise. According to my fitness tracking that’s spending almost as much calories as going to the gym. So figured I can just do that and have a nice brisk walk twice a day and also take pictures around the city.

On the weekend I took a longer bike ride in the countryside to the forest with our little pond. Also started a rewrite of my Pixelfed Bulk Uploader in Rust. Figured that trying to write the whole thing with tools like ChatGPT or Claude doesn’t give me the clean code I like. I spent too much time explaining to the LLM what I want to achieve and an equal amount debugging the output from the LLMs.

Wo schreibt ihr euren Rollenspielkram?

Vor einiger Zeit habe ich gelernt, dass ich meine besten Sachen nicht am Rechner zustande bringe, ehrlich gesagt findet dort frühestens die erste Rohfassung statt. Aber vor dem Computer denke ich mir die Sachen nicht aus. Ausgedacht wird bei mir woanders. Zum Beispiel an diesen Lokalitäten:

Café

Ins Café gehe ich am liebsten, wenn es dort leerer ist und setze mich mit einem Notizbuch und einem Kaffee (schwarz, danke der Nachfrage!) in eine sonnige Ecke.

Vorteile

• Es ist gerade leise genug, um Gedanken zu fassen und man kann aus dem Fenster schauen und Leute und … Dings sehen.
• Getränke und Kuchen
• Die Leute fragen sehr selten, was man da eigentlich macht.
• Leise Musik.
• Kultiviert aussehen und trotzdem Nerdkram machen
• Mid-Level Inspiration.

Nachteile

• Drastische Überkoffeinierung ist eine echte Gefahr
• Mid-Level Inspiration

Parkbank

In den Park zu gehen, um zu schreiben - das habe ich mehr als ein paar Male gemacht.

Vorteile

• Gute Luft und da sind Bäume, die mich inspirieren.
• Viele Sinneseindrücke, aber nicht zu dominant, um ablenkend zu sein
• Entspannend.
• Draußen! Es schreibt sich besser, wenn die Sonne scheint. Da sind manchmal Tiere!

Nachteile

• Auf Dauer etwas, nun ja, zu entspannend
• Draußen! Es schreibt sich schlecht, wenn Gewitter kommt.

Kneipe

Wer mich besser als ein klein wenig kennt, wird hier wenig überrascht sein: Denis schreibt bevorzugt in Kneipen! Besonders gern, wenn diese nur halb voll sind, Lautstärke egal. Kneipen sind gut. Alkohol spielt dabei keine vordergründige Rolle, denn es gibt diese

Vorteile

• Charaktere schreiben sich wie von selbst, man muss sich nur umschauen!
• Je nach Uhrzeit in ihrer Intensität skalierende bizarre Vorkommnisse
• Die bewundernden Blicke des Personals
• Laute Musik hilft mir beim fokussieren
• Getränke sind verfügbar!
• Coole Leute werden neugierig und stellen Fragen (und manchmal geben sie einen aus - es ist erstaunlich, wie viele Leute sich auch für „so komisches Zeug“ interessieren)

Nachteile

• Je nach Uhrzeit in ihrer Intensität skalierende bizarre Vorkommnisse
• Die despektierlichen Blicke des Personals
• Getränke sind verfügbar!
• Anstrengende Leute werden neugierig und stellen Fragen (und gehen nicht weg)

Who is Free Software for?

For a while I have been arguing that maybe there are some issues with the whole “Open*” movements, their founding myths and ideologies (see for example my talk at Fluconf). This criticism comes from a place of love. All the writing on this blog is licensed CC-BY-SA to allow others to take the texts and do something with it: I release my work under those conditions because I believe that we need strong and rich commons to flourish as a society but also as communities, groups and individuals. I’ve also been running my own personal systems (servers, my own laptops and a few other systems) on Linux for more than 20 years now. I am deeply embedded in the space of open culture but also Free and Open Source Software.

This morning I made a bit of an off-hand remark that summarized a few thoughts going on in my head:

People within the Open* movements have done the impossible, have created whole encyclopedias, the most successful and most used kernel on the planet and a metric fuckton of custom, optimized operating systems, software libraries, and user facing programs. Have contributed to the commons to a degree that wouldn’t even have been credible within science fiction stories. Some of these systems – and I am not kidding here – should be considered the digital wonders of the world.

So why have we not “won”? Wikipedia might be considered to have won: By now it is the default digital source of information for large parts of the planet when trying to get to mere facts. But Wikipedia is an outlier in that regard.

Using Statcounter’s metrics Firefox – the Open Source browser that is not depending on what Google’s ad department wants to do – currently (March 2025) has a market share of 2.63%. And sure mobile platforms and Apple’s anti-competitive strategies when it comes to mobile have made it harder but even on desktops it’s just 6.3%. That’s absolutely not nothing, it’s millions of people. But not exactly something that shifts any sort of power and influence away from tech giants.

Again using Statcounter, Linux has a desktop market share of about 4%. Which is a lot given how hard the main competitors Microsoft and Apple are making the life of Linux developers and distribution builders. But still not even close to being an actually relevant player in the market for most purposes. Which everyone using Linux feels daily when asking for certain software vendors to release Linux versions of their stuff: “It’s not worth it.”

First: R.L. Dane is completely right in their description about how “Open Source” is kind of the corporate version of “Free Software”. “Open Source” tried to strip the little politics that “Free Software” as a concept carried to make the whole scene more digestable to corporate entities (in any meaning of the word).

Second: I believe that they also nailed who Free Software is for. Quote:

And I am afraid that we haven’t moved enough past that mindset.

That’s 100% not saying that nothing happened. A big deal has happened. Think of Outreachy that tries to get more people from diverse backgrounds internships to work on open source and build a career in software. Think of PyLadies who have put in so much work to give more women the opportunity and a safer path towards becoming active contributors into the Python ecosystem. And there are so many, many activities like that. So much work so many technical communities put into making the path towards becoming a member easier, more inclusive, fairer, etc. Those activities are fundamentally about fulfilling the Open Source promise: To give everyone the ability to have control over the software they use and the tool to build upon what’s already there. Mission … not accomplished but on its way, right?

But what are we doing? What are we trying to help “everyone” with?

We are trying to give more people the opportunity to “become hackers”. So they can profit off of all this stuff built by hackers for hackers. This isn’t a project to free all of us, it’s a project to give everyone a degree of freedom if they join our club. If they assimilate. This is Borg-mode.

We are not meeting people where they are. We expect them to come to us in order to understand why our values matter and are the best. Which – sorry to have to say so – they are not.

In 1971 the black civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer coined the phrase

Nobody’s Free Until Everybody’s Free.

And we have not taken that to heard. Because it does not say “Nobody’s Free until everyone is like us and then we have tools to create some freedoms”.

This is why so many outreach programs don’t work. Because what we are selling isn’t a solution to people’s actual problems but a new identity. And most people already got one of those. Now the solutions we propose might actually help our target audience with a real problem that they are faced with but so often our narratives don’t connect to their realities. We’re stuck in our own heads. Our own mechanisms and traditions.

I keep realizing and feeling this being stuck whenever I talk about moving beyond Open Source and Licenses and all that. I get a lot of responses arguing for example that “if you restrict people to not use your software for war you are no longer compatible with Freedom 0 and are no longer Free Software” as if that mattered. Yeah sure, that’s the legal regiment we’ve built. And where has that got us? Are we happy here? Is that enough?

Is me being able to customize my systems to my needs good enough? I recently changed a lot of my infrastructure to depend less on US companies and service providers for the simple reason that currently hosting stuff in the US (digitally but also physically) does not feel save. I can do that. Can my dad? My neighbors? Is that their fault?

In motherfucking 2013 I wrote:

Telling people to “host your own” when some big company closes or buys a service is very similar to the princess who, when learning that the peasants had no bread, said: “Let them eat cake.”

Hosting your own is a solution for the gifted and wealthy few, for many it’s blatant cynicism.

I stand by that. We need to get out of our comfort zones and modes of operation. Need to move beyond the seemingly apolitical cyberspace of free licenses. We need to reshape our thinking towards more political goals and values.

Maybe then non-hackers might also give a shit.

“A Luddite Criticism of Open Source” at FluConf

On February 1st I had the privilege of getting to speak at the first Fluconf about Open Source and why that whole movement might not do as much good for as as we might want it to. It’s not that Open Source is “bad” but that it is sometimes presented as a solution to sociopolitical issues it is not capable (nor even trying) to fix.

The talk description was:

“People interested in Fluconf will also be interested in Open Source or to be more precise Free/Libre Open Source Software. Everyone has been using Open Source for many years but many from this community have shifted to trying to run their personal infrastructures on non-proprietary pieces of software and some even hardware.

This is already an important shift towards freeing ourselves and each other from corporate dominance but is it really doing enough? Are our licenses protecting the values we actually care about?

Coming from a luddite background I want to dive into a a bit of a critical reading of the values that we use codified mostly as licenses: Are they really enough? Which aspects are they missing and why? And what are the consequences of those omissions?

I’ll try to end up looking at mechanisms of integrating luddist principles in software projects. Can they offer additional safeguards?

This sessions doesn’t claim to have all the answers. But hopefully some good questions and a few ideas of where to go.”
