Exactly two years ago, we started to post links on #Mastodon via our account @heiseonline 👇

mastodon.social/@heiseonline/1…

It took longer, than I expected, but here we are: it seems like this account now brings continuously more #traffic to heise.de than #X (#Twitter) in its entirety, although it only has ¼ of the follower number (and many of them don't seem to be active anymore).
I'll prepare some graphs after the weekend.

On a recent Dot Social episode @mike interviewed @404mediaco and they mentioned that the ratio of followers-money received is significantly higher coming via their Fediverse accounts.

Where does this thought come from? In my experience, the number of followers is even more important here, because of the lack of an algorithmic feed, that pushes posts with less engagment in other feeds.
And I can back it up: We have multiple accounts here (look at social.heise.de) and all the others bring way less traffic than the only real big one.

Und da ich euch eh per RSS folge und im Feedreader habe, trage ich nicht zur Statistik bei, freue mich aber trotzdem!

Wann wird ActivityPub euer Forum erweitern? ;)

The week is over, here are some charts:
For two weeks in a row, #Mastodon brought more #traffic than #X / #Twitter to heise.de.
But I forgot, that's not just via @heiseonline, but also @heisec, @ct_Magazin, @heiseautos, @iX_Magazin etc. (but for Twitter its the same).

#Bluesky is way behind, #Threads even more. Only Twitter is clearly falling.

If you add all the #TwitterAlternative s, they have been in the lead for a while now.

If you add @Flipboard and sum it up wit #Mastodon (because #Fediverse 😉), then #Facebook ist not far.

But, if you have a look on the numbers since the beginning of 2022, then it's clear, that this is mainly a story about the decline of #Twitter.

@heiseonlineenglish do you have data on how many people leave heise upon seeing the cookie banner? the sentiment on them is pretty mixed in my sphere
Als Antwort auf Martin Holland

@heiseonlineenglish
That's really helpful for sharing with my international colleagues 👍
Is there also any english-exclusive content?

X limits the reach of posts with links pretty severely on the 'for you' timeline, which is what most people scroll on. The code is open source and you can see the demotion values for posts with urls. They want you to pay to show links.

Here's a good question and I have the answer: #Traffic per Follower for different social networks (here for the last 4 weeks).

#Mastodon is now behind #Bluesky, #Flipboard still far ahead. #X and #Threads are really far behind.

It's a news app, very algorithmic, but you can tweak it very much to your liking. To find stories/articles.

I really never heard before.
And I thought I’m quite good informed about the SoMe.
Are there any kind of groups using it or is it more common?

thanks for the advice. There is a growing group of educators who use Bluesky — I’m told. May try it for this part of my life 💙 since I’m an educator. Not sure about the rest.

Not you perhaps but I see one comment... judging the fedi by traffic and other capitalist mindset nonsense is a mistake.

I see it everywhere, not just related to SM but in projects that aim to improve life.

We are so surrounded by a self-destructive culture we have to work very hard to see what is good and what is not for ourselves, and to avoid seeing things through a lens that distorts our understanding to the point we choose badly, choosing things that were never in our own interests.

@heisec @ct_Magazin @heiseautos @iX_Magazin I had a very similar experience with Threads (26K followers) v. Mastodon (1K followers).

Mastodon blew Threads out of the water. Can you share your follower count on each? Especially Twitter v. Mastodon?

#MASTODON vs #THREADS Engagement Experiment

Followers:
Mastodon 1,031
Threads 26,800

3 posts at the same time on each.

Mastodon: 62 Hearts 24 Reblogs 4 Replies
Threads: 2 Hearts

26x followers! Bupkis.

Follower counts & the active users on a platform **DO. NOT. MATTER.** if the #algorithm doesn't bless your posts.

Let your creative friends know, Threads (and #Twitter / X of course) are not the solution.

do you think the small but steady increase in Mastodon accesses the past weeks is also part of the Twitter decline?
Als Antwort auf Mathias Micheel

@buerviper
No, I totally attribute that to the fix for a bug, that cut our URL-parameter from the preview card. Now with #Mastodon V4.3.0 we can simply see more of our #Mastodon-traffic again.

See: social.heise.de/@mho/111184033…

And also in English: The nice new preview cards (no irony, I really like them) seem to cut off URL-Parameter. That means that we see less and less traffic coming from #Mastodon on @heiseonline. Because more and more #instances get the update, and more people click on the preview and not the URL.

That means that my little summaries are getting quite worthless: I don't know if we could/or would want to add the URL-Parameter to the previews.

This is really interesting to see. Thanks for sharing. I notice that the y axis isn't labelled, perhaps to hide precise numbers for commercial reasons, which is understandable. Are you able to confirm at perhaps that the y axis is linear not logarithmic, and that the origin in the y axis is 0 please? (these both appear so, but I'd like to be sure)
Als Antwort auf Martin Holland

thanks for sharing! How are you measuring the traffic, URL parameters on links?
Als Antwort auf Andy Piper

@andypiper

Yes, exactly. For the whole two years. But there was a bug, cutting them from the preview cards. So we missed many visits for a whole years.

This was only fixed with Version 4.3.0
