Is Bluesky 'obeying in advance'?

The #Bluesky Jesse Singal controversy took an interesting turn this weekend. Two articles one in Advocate (advocate.com/business/bluesky-…) and another in TechCrunch (techcrunch.com/2024/12/13/blue…) suggest the refusal to ban the anti-trans podcaster may be due to fear of regulatory action.

"...this decision could put the social media company at risk with the FCC since Brendan Carr, Trump’s pick... plans to go after tech companies he thinks are censoring right-wing voices." 👀

What is very instructive is to contrast this case with another social media thing that happened this weekend. On Saturday the Russian gov sent @stux an abuse request that one of the accounts on mstdn.social be removed.

Stux immediately published the notice (mstdn.social/@stux/11365246164…) making very very clear his intent to defy it. When his hosting company backed him up, he published that (mstdn.social/@stux/11366257336…). And now he is trolling the Russians (mstdn.social/@stux/11366384855…).

A profile in courage!

Holy shit.

The Russian gov send in an abuse request for the @Bellingcat to be removed from mstdn.social :amaze:

I am not gonna comply, and have replied to Hetzner

No way I'm gonna let the evils of the gremlin dictate stuff on anything I host

UPDATE: Hetzner ignores their requests and we're in the clear: mstdn.social/@stux/11366257336…

You might say; yes but mstdn.social is based in the Netherlands with servers in Europe, while #Bluesky is a US company with its servers in the the US. It's not the same thing. And, the answer is that you are exactly right.

On the day after the election @Gargron posted (mastodon.social/@Gargron/11343…): "I think it's going to be more important than ever that #Mastodon and the #fediverse are not centrally operated out of the US unlike almost every other social media platform out there."

Case in point.

@stux TBH, #Roskomnadzor should be considered a #hostile entity and thus be banned.

Feel free to let me know of any domains they use besides rkn.gov.ru so they can also be added to the spammer blocklist I maintain...

That being said I guess #hetzner refused to side with #Roskomnadzor after they had done so in the past more than once is surprising to me...

@stux I've thus updated the blocklist and I do know for a fact that at least two ISPs ingest that into their CI/CD pipeline...

  • I just can't name them as their staff contacted me under the demand of anonymity and they also only pull it as their upstream once a day... ^

calling a bigotted hatespeaker an "anti-trans activist" is a bold move...

  • that's thin ice, m8...

Hmmm... see your point. 'Activist' can have a positive connotation, and that is certainly not the intention. What's a better word than 'activist'?

Edited to 'podcaster' for now to align with the article.

Thanks for the comment.
